As you view this sign, the road before used to be THE road across the lower everglades from Homestead and Florida City to Flamingo before this was National Park land. The problem with the road was that it was constructed without any thought of how to let the glade waters flow from north to south, or not enough thought anyway. The park bulldozed most of the road and put in more culverts in the remaining portion, which is now only accessible for hiking and biking, and authorized park vehicles, of course.
When you visit the Anhinga Trail at the Royal Palm area, you are actually walking on a portion of the Old Ingraham Highway. This YAH sign at Gate 15 shows you where you are with respect to the remaining portion. If you bike past this gate (which my family has done several times since 1970), it will go so many miles before the road just dies out. Don't try to go past the end or YOU may die out. The 'gators may not enjoy the company.
