The pub does look fairly modern, but it's not clear whether the pub was totally new to the village when it was built, or whether it replaced an older pub.

The pub sign is attached to a wooden pole rather than the pub wall, and the painter on the pub sign is standing on a ladder leaning against a wooden pole painting the pub sign.

Nearby are two pub customers happily drinking foaming pints of beer.

The only incongruous thing is the scenery behind the painter, it depicts a nearby river with a bridge crossing it. Although there is a famous railway bridge near Thornton, it does not cross a large river and is not visible from the pub. However although not necessarily reflecting reality it does make a pretty picture.
