Mount Strange is located on Hango Hill an ancient place of execution. The most famous execution was that of William Christian who was better known at the time of his execution as 'Illiam Dhone'. William was shot, however, and not hung as the place name would suggest. William's execution took place on January 2, 1663, He was executed for his part in the Manx uprising against the Derby family who held the Island for the Royalists at that time.
There is a plaque in front of the ruins which reads:
HANGO HILL
ANCIENT PLACE OF EXECUTION
HERE, WILLIAM CHRISTIAN OF
RONALDSWAY ("ILLIAN DHONE"
TO THE MANY MANX PEOPLE, WHO
REGARDED HIM AS THEIR NATIONAL
CHAMPION) WAS SHOT ON 2ND
JANUARY 1663 FOR HIS PART IN
THE MANX RISING OF 1651
AGAINST THE DERBY FAMILY,
WHO HELD THE ISLAND FOR
THE ROYALIST CAUSE.
THE RUINS ARE THOSE OF A LATE
17TH CENTURY SUMMERHOUSE
KNOWN AS "MOUNT STRANGE"
MANX MUSEUM AND NATIONAL TRUST
