Ringley is a small village near to Bolton. It is close to the River Irwell and a pack horse bridge that was built in 1677.

Maybe there was a smithy near to the pub, but certainly many horses must have crossed the bridge and at least a few of them would have lost a shoe.

Maybe the owner of the horse would be grateful for a drink whilst waiting for his horse to be shod.

The blacksmith in the sign is hammering a red hot horseshoe on his anvil and two others have already been made.
