Forte Michelangelo is a massive fort completed in 1535 to protect Rome from pirates. It is located in Civitavecchia which is the the port city on the Tyrrhenian Sea serving Rome, 40 miles northwest of Rome.

Giuliano della Rovere, who became Pope Julius II in 1503, commissioned Forte Michaelangelo defend the port of Civitavecchia, Rome's port on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The fortress was completed in 1535 under Pope Paul III of Farnese. The keep of the fort was completed by Michelangelo. Fort Michelangelo is one of the largest forts built during of that era.

Forte Michelangelo is quadrilateral in shape with four turrets on each corner. It is 400' on the east-west side and 300' long on the north-south side. The walls are covered in travertine limestone and the fort was once surrounded by a moat. The four bastions are named: San Colombano, Santa Ferma, San Sebastiano and San Giovanni.
