L'actuel hôtel de ville d'Auchel date du XVIe siècle. Avant de devenir un hôtel de ville, cet édifice était un pensionnat pour les jeunes filles. Historique de ville : Le territoire dépendit de la famille d'Olhain au xve siècle puis de la famille de Béthune au xviiie siècle. En 1851, on y découvre un gisement minier. Cette ancienne commune minière a frôlé les 15 000 habitants dans les années 1950 grâce à l'activité charbonnière. La récession minière à la fin des années 1960 dans le secteur a amené un « plan de reconversion », accompagnant l'implantation à faible coût pour les dirigeants d'entreprises de différentes enseignes industrielles dans des secteurs variés à la fin des années 1960, comme la très connue famille Dewavrin ayant fait fortune dans le textile (Auchelaine, groupe Dewavrin). D'autres groupes ou entreprises se sont installés : fabrication de tapis (Levasseur), industrie automobile (sous-traitance de Peugeot, Citroën : Faurecia), fabrication de sacs en plastique (Jet Sac), entreprise de Bâtiment Travaux Publics (Desquesnes), Coustenoble, Douez-Lambin ... L'activité économique était encore florissante durant les années 1980 avec la création de plusieurs centaines d'emplois, sous l'égide du Sénateur-Maire Jean-Luc Bécart, Président du Syndicat d'Aménagement des Zones Industrielles d'Auchel-Lillers. La tendance s'inverse depuis les années 2000, où le bassin d'emploi se désertifie à la suite des délocalisations, « plans sociaux », forçant les salariés, et notamment les jeunes, à chercher du travail ailleurs (perte de Dewavrin-Auchelaine, suppressions d'emplois chez Faurecia).

The present town hall of Auchel dates from the sixteenth century. Before becoming a town hall, this building was a boarding school for young girls. City history: The territory depended on the family of Olhain in the fifteenth century then from the family of Bethune in the eighteenth century. In 1851, a mineral deposit was discovered. This former mining town bordered the 15,000 inhabitants in the 1950s thanks to coal mining. The trend has been reversed since the early 2000s, when the labor market became desertified as a result of relocations, "social plans", forcing employees, especially young people, to seek work elsewhere (loss of Dewavrin-Auchelaine, job cuts at Faurecia).
