This pier is dedicated to Mayor Arthur N. Hamel the 57th mayor of the City of Fort Myers from 1984-1988. Art was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1927 and came to Fort Myers in 1949. He joined his family in operating the Tarpon Tackle Shop at Fort Myers Beach. Later he went into the real estate business in 1957 and later into politics. He was elected to the Fort Myers City Council in 1968 and then elected mayor in 1984. He passed away in 2002.
