Buachaille Etive Mòr, (Big Shepherd of Etive), is a mountain in the Highlands of Scotland just south of the A82 Glasgow to Fort William road on the approach to Glencoe. The name is given to the whole mountain mass, a two and a half mile ridge that runs north-east to south-west, north of Glen Etive where the mountain takes its name.
There are four peaks in all, the highest Stob Dearg, (The Red Peak), at 1022 metres, Stob na Doire,1011 metres, Stob Coire Altruim, 941 metres and Stob na Bròige, 956 metres. The last named is the furthest south and the most prominent when seen from Glen Etive to the south-west, it is also one of the two Munros along with Stob Dearg at the northern end.
It is Stob Dearg that gains the most attention, its classic pyramidal peak formation comes into view from the A82 road on approach from the east. From this side the rocky crags are the preserve of experienced rock climbers but two miles along the road a deep gulley cuts into the north face of the mountain. This is Coire na Tulaich and it is the main route for walkers to gain the ridge and all the summits.
