This bell was the "clock" for the patients of the New York State Inebriate Asylum, the nation's first hospital designed to treat alcoholism as a disease.
The bell was originally housed in one of the hospital's 8 towers, but was removed in 1954 due to deteriorating conditions. It was reseated in its present location and used until 1993 when the main building was closed due to safety concerns.
The bell was used to signify certain activities throughout the patients' day: wake-up, meal times, bed times etc.
