In Lake George's downtown section is the Lake George Post Office, which was built in 1940.
The building is located along U.S. Route 9, a block or two south of the park by the lake, on the east side of the road.
The building is a red brick structure with sandstone trim. The cornerstone is at the right corner when facing the front entrance.
The cornerstone has the following text:
"James A Farley
Postmaster General
John M Carmody
Federal Works Administrator
W Englebert Reynolds
Commissioner of Public Buildings
Louis A Simon
Supervising Architect
Neal A Melick
Supervising Engineer
1940"
As indicated by the stone, the post office building was one of the many WPA projects that built public buildings and facilities. I also found out - too late - that there is a beautiful painted mural inside.
Year of construction: 1940
Full inscription:
James A Farley
Postmaster General
John M Carmody
Federal Works Administrator
W Englebert Reynolds
Commissioner of Public Buildings
Louis A Simon
Supervising Architect
Neal A Melick
Supervising Engineer
1940
