The stalls in Rytírská Street offered such varied articles as cloth and fur, but also meat. After demolition of the stalls in 1891 the street saw construction of the City Savings Bank designed by O. Polívka and A. Wiehl, and built in the years 1892-1894 at the cost of 1.2 million crowns. Cecorations on and in the building were created by some of the leading sculptors and painters of the time. The originally three-storey structure (in the picture) was elevated in the 1930s by one more storey. On the right we can see a part of the former Carmelite Monastery, a Baroque building of 1671. In 1848 it housed the St Wenceslas Committee, the leading Czech political authority during the revolution of that year.

Návrh na zrízení Mestské sporitelny pražské byl prijat ve sboru obecních starších dne 19. ledna 1874, zemským záko nem ze dne 17. listopadu téhož roku pak byly schváleny garance pražské obce za její vklady. Výnosem c.k. místodržitelství
ke dni 13. brezna 1875 byly potvrzeny stanovy nového penežního ústavu a 24. brezna 1875 zvolen první výbor, z nehož vzešlo i první reditelství, jehož predsedou se stal Karel Kleinberg. Prvním vkladatelem Mestské sporitelny pražské již zustane po vecné casy historik a predstavitel ceského politického úsilí
František Palacký. Ten ve snaze podporit její snahy hned ráno, v den zahájení cinnosti tohoto ryze ceského penežního ústavu, vložil 400 zlatých.

V letech 1891 - 1894 tak na rozhraní ulic Rytírské, Melantri- chovy a Havelské vznikla honosná novorenesancní budova odpovídající významu instituce, která ji vybudovala, Mestské sporitelny pražské. V roce dokoncení stavby vyšla reprezentacní obsáhlá monografie Nová budova Mestské sporitelny pražské, s cetnými vyobrazeními, kde je zcela detailne uvedeno, která firma provádela i treba sebemenší remeslný detail. Stejne tak je tomu i v prípade skutecne rozsáhlé výtvarné výzdoby exteriéru i interiéru.
Spokojme se tedy s konstatováním, že na velice hodnotné socharské, malírské a štukové výzdobe objektu se podíleli predevším Stanislav Sucharda, František Hergessel, Bohuslav Schnirch, Cenek Vosmík, Celda Kloucek a František Ženíšek. Návrhy Mikoláše Alše pak provedl malír Jaroslav Vešín.
K slavnostnímu otevrení nové budovy došlo v nedeli 24. cervna 1894 za úcasti tolika význacných hostí, že jejich výcet vcetne honosných titulu by vydal za menší brožurku. Hlavní proslovy pronesli predseda reditelství Mestské sporitelny Gustav Adámek a starosta královského hlavního mesta Prahy Cenek Gregor.
