The marker denotes the history of Justus Henry Rathbone, the founder of the Knights of Pythias.
Rathbone, who lived from 1839 to 1889, established the Fraternal Order of the Knights of Pythias in 1864, during the Civil War. It is based on the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order.
There are about 50,000 members worldwide.
The marker can be found at the intersection of Oneida Street and Master Garden Road near the entrance to Forest Hill Cemetery.
