There is an Environment Agency monitoring station very close to here to monitor the river flow.

The area round here uses to be heavily industrialised with mills and mining activity. Since the industry declined the area has been turned into Moses Gate country park.

RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION:
The National River Flow Archive reference 69024 has the following information about the site.
"Hydrometric Area: 69 - Mersey and Irwell
Catchment Area: 145 km2
Measuring Authority (local station number): Environment Agency - Greater Manchester Merseyside and Cheshire (690408) Station Level: 51.6 m AOD
Station Operating Period: 01/1948 -
Station Summary Description: Non-standard broad-crested weir gauging a highly urbanised and industrial catchment.
NHMP Index Site: No
FEH indicative suitability: Pooling
General Description: Station opened December 1948 on a non-standard broad-crested mill weir 45m wide and 1.9 m long, with long downstream slope. 2.9m long with a long downstream slope in narrower river. Bend immediately upstream of weir. Weir is in good condition considering its age.
Flow Record Description: Some records from 1948, but low and medium flows before 1976 particularly are of doubtful quality.
Hydrometric Description: Weir is insensitive, especially at low flows. Very high flows may bypass station on the inside of the loop. Cableway was installed in June 2000. Backwater unlikely - confluence with River Irwell is approx 1.5km downstream, and weir is approx 2.6m above downstream bed. One peak flow rating applied across period of record. Scatter at low flows is thought to be at least partly due to differences in the location and method of spot gauging at different periods. More high flow gaugings required to confirm the rating.
Flow Regime Description: Several reservoirs in headwaters, particularly on the Bradshaw Brook tributary, controlling 27% of the catchment. Many effluent discharges lower down."
