Major General Joseph Mansfield was a high ranking Union officer who was one of six generals killed at the Battle of Antietam during the Civil War. He is buried in Indian Hill Cemetery, Middletown, CT.

The grave of Major General Joseph King Fenno Mansfield is located in a family plot marked by a large rectangular brown headstone in Indian Hill Cemetery. The marker is topped with a ruffled flag and an partially missing ornamental sword, Also interred are his wife, Louisa, who died in 1870, his daughter Mary Louisa who died in 1863, and a son, Joseph, who died as an infant in 1844.
The base of the grave marker has the name MANSFIELD in raised capital letters. The side of the marker has the inscription:
MAJOR GENERAL
JOSEPH K.F. MANSFIELD
U.S.A.
killed at the battle of Antietam, Md.
Sept. 17, 1862 aged 58 yrs. 9 mos.
The date of Mansfield's death is on the headstone is incorrect. The General Mansfield died on September 18, 1862, the day after he was wounded in battle.
Description:
General Joseph K.F. Mansfield Joseph, at age 59, was one of the oldest officers serving in the field during the Civil War. He was born in New Haven, CT and graduated from West Point in 1822. He served in the Army for forty years which included service in the Mexican War and Civil War. During the Battle of Antietam he was in command of the XII Corps. As General Mansfield led his men through the East Woods towards the Cornfield in support of I Corps, he was wounded in the chest he died the next day. He was promoted posthumously to the rank of Major General.
