From 1751 until 1819 wharfs and warehouses beside the canal nearby formed the port for Sheffield. Until then the nearest port was Bawtry on the river Idle about 20 miles from Sheffield.

In 1726 the Cutlers Company gained consent of Parliament for a cut to Tinsley and a road from Tinsley to Sheffield. By 1751 the canal had reached Tnsley where wharfs and warehouses were constructed. The canal was extended to Sheffield in 1819.

After 1819 the area round here developed rapidly into a heavily industrialised area, including power stations and the largest steel works in Europe.

By 1870 the canal and nearby River Don had very little life, a roach caught at the time was stuffed and exhibited in Sheffield such was the unusual nature of such a catch.

George Orwell in 1936 describes the River Don thus : "Even the shallow river that runs through the town is usually bright yellow with some chemical or other."

However heavy industry has now declined around Sheffield and the steel works demolished in the 1980s and replaced by a large shopping mall.

Even though this area is bounded by railway lines and motorways, nature is now showing its resilience and a lot of wildlife has returned to both the River Don and the Sheffield and Tinlsey Canal.

This information board has detail of the flora and fauna that can now be found in this area. It stands at a junction of paths. A ramp off the canal towpath leads to the Meadowhall shopping mall, railway stations and the River Don.
