A pressed copper, original version (copyright 1920), of E.M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" was dedicated on November 11, 1923. This 7' by 3' by 3' sculpture is placed on a 7' high by 13' wide cobblestone base. The sculpture depicts a World War I infantryman dressed in combat uniform. He is depicted in motion with his left foot in front of his right foot. A grenade is held in his raised right hand and he is holding a rifle, horizontally, by his side in his left hand. At the back corners are a pair of tree stumps.
A bronze plaque on the front of the monument is inscribed:

THE WORLD WAR

NORTH CANAAN
three columns of 37 names each, four with gold stars
Plaque on east side is inscribed:
1861 IN MEMORY OF 1865
OF THOSE MEN OF NORTH CANAAN
WHO FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR

OF THE TOWN OF CANAAN WHICH
LATER BECAME NORTH CANAAN, AND WHO
WITH VALOR AND PATRIOTISM,
DEFENDED THE FLAG OF OUR COUNTRY
IN THE COLONIAL WARS
THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION
