The Belfry of Kortrijk dates back to 1307. It was built to show the rest of Europe that Kortrijk was a prosperous centre. From 1410 until 1899, the tower was part of the Lakenhal (cloth hall), itself an important building in the Flemish linen trade. Older buildings in the main market (Grote Markt) were destroyed before 1900 and the belfry was fortunate to survive the urban renewal. In 1999, the belfry became a UNESCO world heritage site.
