This store has been serving Galveston since 1959. Hurricane Ike caused the shop to close for two years, but it takes more than a hurricane to keep the Women of Grace Episcopal Church from helping thier community.

A bronze plaque outside the door reads:

The Silk Purse Established 1959.

The silk purse is an Outreach Ministry of Grace Episcopal Church that serves our Galveston neighbors by providing a low-cost clothes and household goods.

This plaque commemorates the reopening of the silk purse in June of 2010. After it was significant significantly damaged by Hurricane Ike the tall angel on the north side of the building was carved by artist Earl Sampson Jones, Jr. From the stump of an old cedar tree that was destroyed by Ike. The angel stands as a reminder that God's grace can always be found in tragedy and also as a symbol of our helpers Angels - the volunteers who have faithfully and truly worked here for many years.
