Het natuurgebied Holmers-Halkenbroek is onderdeel van het Nationaal beek- en esdorpenlandschap Drentsche Aa. Het Amerdiep is één van de bovenlopen van de Drentsche Aa. Deze ontspringt in het gebied Holmers-Halkenbroek, gelegen tussen de boswachterijen Grolloo en Hooghalen. De beek stroomt in noordwaartse richting dwars door dit gebied.
In het verleden zijn veel sloten en greppels gegraven om het gebied geschikt te maken voor landbouwkundig gebruik. Dit leidde tot verdroging van het gebied en de natuurwaarde ging achteruit. De afgelopen jaren zijn sloten en greppels gedempt om het waterpeil op een hoger niveau terug te brengen, zodat het gebied weer gaat functioneren als bron van de Drentsche Aa.
De uitkijktoren heeft de 'Houtinnovatieprijs' van 2006 gewonnen.

The nature area Holmers Halekenbroeken is part of the Nationlal Landschap "Drentsche Aa". The Amerdiep is part of this stream and has its source in this area.
In the past many ditches were dug out to accommodate agricultural use of the area. This led to drought and the consequent decline of nature values. In recent years the works were reversed, so the area regained its function as source of the Drentsche Aa.
The Look-Out Tower won the "wood innovation price" in 2006.
