Petrified wood is quite prevalent in this part of Oklahoma, and was used in construction of buildings in the Ada area in years past.

On the east side of Wintersmith Park, just east of where the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp was located in 1934, CCC workers found a petrified log. In the 1940s when the WPA was actively building in the Park, a trail and sign was constructed to lead visitors to this unusual site. Today, the area is enclosed behind a chain link fence to discourage vandalism.
