Originally established as East Central State Normal School in 1909, the university was renamed in 1985 to East Central University. This is a first rate four-year university.

Competing in thirteen sports, their teams have a tiger for a mascot. Affectionately named Roary, a sculpture of him is on display just inside the main entrance to the university. Standing atop a brick fountain, in all his ferocious glory, Roary is definitely roaring.

The sculpture has him standing on his hind legs, pawing the air with his front, and roaring "loudly". The bronze sculpture shows faint stripes to enhance the authenticity. No signage is shown of the sculptor. The Honor Plaza in which he stands was established in 1999.
