There are a large number of canals in the UK and each have their own style of labelling the bridges. Some have bridge names, some numbers, but this canal has both and the date of construction.
The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal was built in 1819 to connect the centre of Sheffield with the River Don at Tinsley, the most easterly navigable point on the river.
The City of Sheffield was once a heavily industrialised area with its main industry being steel making. There were a number of large steelworks alongside the canal, but after the industry declined the area became ripe for redevelopment.
After Sheffield made a successful bid to hold the 1992 World Student Games the Don Valley Stadium, Bowl and Arena were all built on the site of the former Brown Bayley Steel Works.
In 1993 this footbridge was built to give a pedestrian route to the area around the Don Valley Stadium. It is a deck arch bridge with the footpath on a bed supported by the cast iron arch.
It is the old steelworks that gives the name to the bridge.
As of 2013 the area is undergoing regeneration once again. The Don Valley Stadium was deemed to be too costly to run by Sheffield City Council and has now been demolished. A new rugby stadium is being built to replace it.
