This trees are commemorative trees for the sister cities Toledo and Toyohashi. The trees were planted in Toledo Botanical Gardens on May 17, 2000.
The cities have been sister cities since April 29, 2000, since then they have had high school student exchanges, visits by the Toledo International Youth Orchestra and scholarships from the University of Toledo. In 2011 Toledo sent $1,350 for tsunami relief.
