Discarded cannon, cast in 1776 by the Mt Aetna Foundry, lay buried for over 200 years just east of Hagerstown.

The accompanying marker states that the cannon was one of several of a contract awarded to cast cannon for the Continental Army. This piece still has its muzzle end attached. This would have been done once the center core had been confirmed in place. However, the center core shifted during casting, rendering the cannon unusable.

It was discarded about a mile west of here and lay buried until discovery about 40 years ago.
