We spotted Smokey from across Highway 20 while shooting the Jehovah's Witnesses (their church, that is).

On the south side of Highway 20, aka the Sherman Pass Scenic Byway, Smokey stands just east of Hesse Boulevard. He is stationed here on the southern outskirts of Republic to guard the Colville National Forest, which surrounds this area. We visited him in late June of 2016 so the fire danger, though the days had been pretty hot and dry, was still only moderate.
