Town founded: 1867
The original Pinckney was located on the Missouri River banks, across the river from today New Haven in Franklin County. It was washed down the river and the ground upon which it stood has fallen into the river and been washed away.
IN 1867 it was re-located to this spot away from flood dangers. All that remains today is the school which closed in 1960 and the cemetery.
"A town and former post office in the southeast part of Pinckney Township, about four miles north of the site of the original Pinckney. The post office was established by 1867, discontinued in 1895, reestablished in 1896, and again discontinued by 1910. It was named for the early Pinckney." ~ Goodwin; Postal Guide; HIST. ST. About the original Pinckney:
"The seat of justice of Montgomery County was first located at Pinckney* ... on the Missouri River, and within the present limits of Warren County. This town was named for Miss Attossa Pinckney Sharp, daughter of Major Benjamin Sharp, the first clerk of the county and circuit clerk of Montgomery County. It was once a flourishing place, but the removal of the county seat to Lewiston proved the death blow, and the town disappeared many years ago (from 1889). The spot where it originally stood has fallen into the river, and a post-office in the vicinity, with perhaps one store, are the only reminders of its existence ..." ~ "Beck's Gazetteer of Missouri," 1823, p. 309
Warren County ws created in 1835, so this area was then Montgomery County.
