Prairie Loop Trail (.6 miles)

Biologists call a blending of two or more communities an ecotone. As you hike along this trail, you will notice an ecotone transition, where the Midwestern Tallgrass Prairies meet the Eastern Woodlands. The Prairie Loop trail contains a variety of tall grasses and wildflowers along the native trees from this ecotone. Many choices of shelter and food support an abundance of wildlife native to both communities.

Insets at two corners show prickly pear cactus and the osage orange, known commonly 'round these parts as a bodark (bois d'arc).

There is plenty of parking at the Travertine Nature Center, where the main trail begins.
