Elevation here is 4,147. Yes, snow in the winter. And snow that stays on the Sierra Buttes several thousand feet higher at 8,600 ft.
The town was once the home of the Sierra Butte Mines which operated for over 80 years and was the second largest gold producer in the county. An avalanche in 1853 caused the town to relocate in the valley. Miners about 1860 equaled the present population.
