Its location and scenic views make the Chatham Light one of the most popular lighthouse visits on Cape Cod. Built originally as one of a pair of lighthouses at this location (the use of a pair was to differentiate this location from the Highland Light located further north up the coast - the twin light was moved to Eastham in 1923), the Chatham Light stands 48 feet tall. The structure consists of a cast iron exterior and a brick lining.
In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard took over the lighthouse (the keeper's house currently serves as the Chatham Coast Guard Station). The lantern room underwent a complete refurbishing in 1969, at which time a 2.8 million candlepower set of aerobeacons were installed (they are said to be visible for up to 25 miles). For those interested, the old lantern room is on display on the grounds of the Chatham Historical Society.
It is possible to tour the lighthouse, but only rarely, and by appointment.
