The statue is located near the restrooms in the history section of the museum. The sign at the bottom says, "Soon after 9/11, a Statue of Liberty replica appeared on the sidewalk in front of a Manhattan firehouse. Home to FDNY Engine Company 54, Ladder Company 4, and Battalion 9, the firehouse lost 15 firefighters at the World Trade Center on 9/11. People walking past the building began to place small American flags, condolence messages, prayer cards, rosary beads, patches bearing military and uniformed service insignia and other tribute items on the statue, which soon became known as Lady Liberty.
After several months, surviving members of the firehouse decided to lend Lady Liberty to the nearby Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86. During its exhibition there, the memorial acquired additional tribute items, including those contributed by relatives of 9/11 victims. In August 2006, the statue was donated to the newly founded 9/11 Memorial Museum.
