As one approaches the town of Aberdeen, NC from US 501 South, the traveler is greeted by a new welcome sign.

One can see readily the image of a railroad engine and a splash of a tartan. The are was settled in the early years of our country. Many of the settlers were Highland Scots thus the tartan colors. Later, the mostly agricultural area was the site of a new local railroad, the A&R. This is the railroad connection for the sign. The area was very prosperous with good soil for growing, fledgling industry and rail connection to the then Seaboard Railroad in Aberdeen and Fayetteville.
On the column to the sign's right is the town seal of Aberdeen.
