Jena Merket Place with the statue (left) The Hanfried

John Frederick I (Johann Friedrich I in German) was not a monarch, but as one of the seven Electors - the Noblemen who elected the German Emperor - he was one of the most powerful people of his time. Respected for his lordliness he was called John the Magnanimous, even by his enemies. A fierce fighter for the Reformation, the Lutherans called him St. John the Steadfast. The somewhat disrespectful students of the university he founded, however, named him Hanfried, derived from his name JoHANn FRIEDrich.

The name stuck and until this day, the monument is officially known as The Hanfried.

The bronze statue praises John Frederick I as the founder of the Jena University - today one of the largest universities in Germany. It shows the Elector in his gown, wearing the chain of office of the director of the university.

Holding a sword and bible he is also shown as a defender of the faith.
The Bible is opened at Psalm 124:
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

The statue was designed by renowned sculptor Friedrich Drake and was manufactured in the Lauchhammerbell foundry. It was erected in 1858 in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the university.
