Today most people passing through Blaine do not understand the city's connection to the sea. With millions of people crossing at the two border crossings between the United States and Canada they see Blaine as a community near the Canadian border with cheap gasoline. However, in the fishing port of Blaine it was not uncommon for fishermen to be drowned or lost at sea. In this 1902 incident George Franklin Dement drowned in a storm in the Gulf of Georgia.
