The Friederikenstift is one of the oldest and largest hospitals in Hannover. In 1840 christian women founded in Hannover the "Frauenverein für Armen- und Krankenpflege" (Women's club for poor and the sick). 1843 King Ernst August I. gave the "Weißhaarscher Hof" to the club. The club was named in 1844 after the Queen Friederike, who died three years earlier.
