In Keene, along West Street, is the Colony Mill Marketplace where a plaque is installed on the main building, dated 1838.
The building is located about a half mile west of the center of Keene. The closest parking to the plaque is off a road called Gilbo Avenue, turn south from West Street, then take the first right into the parking lot. Then head for the main entrance through a courtyard between the buildings.
The plaque is located near the southeast corner of the building on the wall facing south. It is midway between two second floor windows and to the right of a glassed in area.
The plaque simply reads, "1838." On other, smaller, brick buildings in the complex, there are other plaques with dates, at least one is "1810," earlier than this building.
According to a source, mill activity has been here since 1775, when a gristmill and saw mill were placed nearby. In 1815, the mills were purchased by Francis Faulkner and Josiah Colony. Two fires occurred. The first was in 1825, which burned all the buildings made of wood. The next was thirteen years later, in 1838, which partially damaged the building. The building was rebuilt 3 1/2 stories tall. Later, a fourth story was added and other additions were added. The mills were closed in 1953, stayed unused for years until 1983 when it was renovated into the Colony Mill Marketplace housing commercial space.
