Aligi Sassu was born in Milan, Italy in 1912. He was an artist that used various techniques such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking.

He went to the island of Mallorca as a tourist in the 1950s and, soon after, in 1962, settled in the town of Pollença. In 1987 Palma City Council appointed him honorary citizen. In 1997 he received the gold medal of the Circle of Fine Arts of Palma and the medal "Ramon Llull" granted by the Balearic Government.

He donated this sculpture to the city of Palma in 1983. It portrays a rearing horse with its front upward and supporting its robust body by the back hooves and tail. link
