The museum is named after the Neapolitan archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli Senator of the Kingdom of Italy and first promoter of scientific excavations in Pompeii. The exhibition center was set up in 1905 at the hands of a few individuals and was first housed in the town hall before being transferred to its present site in 1936.
Items of particular interest are a statue of Aphrodite, gladiator statues, a remarkably large and well preserved mosaic, and a bronze funerary piece called the "Carrello in Bronzo".
