On July 5, 1918, an excursion steamboat took about 500 people from Kingston Mines on the Illinois river to an amusemant park in Peoria, IL. On the return trip the boat sank with 87 fatalities. Other sources put the number of passengers at exactly 496 and say that the large hole was torn in the hull by a tree stump. Recent news reports said that the last known survivor of this accident, a 106 year old woman, died this past August (2006).
