The variety of walks of life witnessed in Tempe was the artist’s inspiration for the Mill Avenue District Utility Box project. Painting freestyle, Brown layered numerous faces on the brightly colored, undulating background. Passersby of all ages provided ideas for the faces, many of them with happy expressions. His objective was to represent the fabric of the Tempe population, and all who are involved in contributing to Tempe’s richness: elderly, young, parents, city workers, tourists, students, artists, professors, business owners, and so on. Brown states, “At the end of the day I hope people can just enjoy seeing different likenesses and be reminded we are all a small part.”
