Hilo is the largest settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, which encompasses the Island of Hawaii. The town overlooks Hilo Bay, situated upon two shield volcanoes; Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the site of some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories. The self-guided walking tour of downtown Hilo focuses on 21 historic sites dating from the 1870s to the present. The tour will take about one hour if walked continuously and up to two hours if you take the time to explore. It starts at Mo’oheau Park where the walking tour brochure is available at the bus station kiosk.

Our pictures show:
1- the Mo’oheau Bandstand, a gift from Admiral George Beckley to the people of Hawaii when the park was dedicated in 1905
2- Hilo Farmers Market located in front of Mo’oheau Park - open Wednesday and Saturday from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm
3- Saint Joseph Catholic Church designed in the style of old mission architecture
4- the Federal Building - formerly the courthouse, today it houses government offices, including the downtown branch of the US Post Office
5- Kalakaua Square named in honor of King David Kalakaua who ruled the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1874 to 1891
6- Koehnen Building housing the Mokupapapa Discovery Center
7- the Pacific Tsunami Museum chronicling the history of Hawai`i Island tsunamis and the resulting reconstruction of Hilo town
