Die Universität Leipzig bietet aktuell (Wintersemester 2015/16) 29.227 Menschen die Möglichkeit eines Studiums. Auf Grund der Größe der Universität und der zentralen Lage des Hauptgebäudes im Leipziger Stadtzentrum, sind die einzelnen Einrichtungen und Fakultäten weit über das gesamte Stadtgebiet verstreut.
Seit 1409 wird an der 'Alma mater Lipsiensis' gleichsam gelehrt, gelernt und geforscht. Begonnen hat alles mit der bei der Gründung eingerichteten Artistenfakultät. Hinzu kamen später die Philosophen Fakultät sowie die drei höheren Fakultäten für Medizin, Jurisprudenz und Theologie. Heute sind in der Universität Leipzig 14 Fakultäten untergebracht. Im Lauf der Jahre verbrachten verschiedene heute berühmte Professoren und Studenten Lehr- und Lernjahre an der Universität. Zu den Studierenden gehören unter anderem: Müntzer, Leibniz, Lessing, Goethe, Schumann, Wagner, Nietzsche und Kästner. Im Laufe der über 600 Jahre alten Geschichte erlebte die Universität verschiedene Regierungsformen, gesellschaftliche sowie politische Ereignisse und musste den einen oder anderen Einschnitt verkraften.

Die Waymark zeigt auf den Haupteingang des ‚ Neuen Augusteums‘. Von Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts bis 1986 stand an derselben Stelle bereits das alte Augusteum, welches von der DDR-Regierung gesprengt und durch ein Rektoratsgebäude im sozialistischen Stil ersetzt wurde. Mit der Umgestaltung des innerstädtischen Universitätscampus wurde das ‚Neue Augusteum‘ (2007-2012) der neue zentrale Ort und das Hauptgebäude der Universität Leipzig.

The University of Leipzig is currently offering (winter-semester 2015/16) 29 227 people the opportunity of studying. Because of the size of the university and the central location of the main building in the city center, the institutions and faculties of the university are scattered over the entire urban area.
At the ‚ Alma mater Lipsiensis' were taught, learned and researched since 1409. It all began with the setting-up of the ‘Artistenfakultät‘. The philosophers faculty and the three higher faculties of medicine, law and theology followed later. Today in the University of Leipzig are located 14 faculties. Over the years different now famous professors and students spent teaching and learning years at the University. The students include amongst other: Müntzer, Leibniz, Lessing, Goethe, Schumann, Wagner, Nietzsche and Kästner. Over the more than 600-year history, the university experienced different forms of government, social and political events and it had to cope with one or the other incision.

The Waymark points to the main entrance of the, 'New Augusteum'. From the early 19th century until 1986 the old Augusteum was standing at this location. But the old Augusteum was blown up by the GDR government and replaced by an administrative building in the socialist style. With the transformation of the urban campus, the ‘New Augusteum 'become the new central location and the main building of the University of Leipzig.
