The Battle of Salamanca (in French and Spanish known as "Battle of Arapiles") (visit link) was part of the the Peninsular War. (visit link)

The Anglo-Portuguese army under the Duke of Wellington (visit link) defeated the French forces of Napoleon's empire.

On 22 July 1812 the Duke of Wellington had his Headquarter on this hill and had hidden his army behind this hill. The commander of the army of Napoleon's empire was on the other hill, but, could not see the movements of the Anglo-Portuguese army (while the Duke of Wellington had a good overview on the French troops). This was a big disadvantage to the French commander, especially as he was wounded from shrapnels at the beginning of the battle and the French army was in confusion /chaos afterwards without a leader.

At the end of this day, the allied losses were 3,129 British and 2,038 Portuguese dead or wounded. The Spanish troops were orderd to prevent the French escape routes and did not take part in the battle, thus they suffered only six casualties. The French, who lost this buttle, incured approx. 13,000 dead or wounded and captured.
