In 1608, a first chapel dedicated to the blessed Dominican priest San Pedro González Telmo was build on the west side of the bay, greatly expanded during the 17th century and a part of the Dominican monastery. A fire in 1778 destroyed the monastery and chapel.
The new current chapel was built in 1780 on the east side of the bay in the area of the old fortification at an instigation of sailors Guild (Gremio de mariantes). The Great Flood of November 7th, 1826 partially destroyed the chapel and in 1870 the chapel was reconstructed again. In 1968 it was restored with the support of the Catholic Foreign Secretary for German-speaking Catholics to discourage German-language services. On February 15th, 2000, the Ermita de San Telmo was declared a National Monument by the Canary Islands Government.
Th chapel is a simple rectangular building, covered with a gabled roof. The walls are made of whitewashed stones. Two archways of basalt are the only decorative elements that interrupt the white walls. The main façade is oriented to the west. On the right side is a two-storey belfry (Espadaña), a bell is in its lower opening. Mounted above the roof ridge is a cross in the centre of the façade. The sacristy is attached to the head side of the building and has its own pitch roof and a small entrance.
