The lighthouse was rebuilt. Much of the horseshoe to the west of the lighthouse has been continuously eroding. Slides on the coastal highway 1 have required expensive structural modification to maintain access to one of the great scenic routes (when it is not foggy).
Severe winter storms have magnified the landscape of the rugged coastline. Tsunami warning signs remind folks of unpredictable weather conditions, higher than usual tides. Most of the smaller trees lean because of wind exposure.
This area became part of the California Coastal National Monument MARCH 11, 2014.
The name Stornetta comes from the family who raised dairy cows here and had a creamery in Napa Co.
