Settled originally by the Arnold and Comstock families around 1690. The oldest existing home is the Peleg Arnold Tavern at the corner of Woonsocket Rd and Great Rd. Most of the homes are 2 1/2 story gable end homes with centered entrances. It was a thriving agricultural area and commercial center, centered around the intersection of 2 major roads connecting Providence with Worcester and Eastern Connecticut with Boston. During its peak years in the early 19th century the village had 3 taverns, several stores and 2 prestigious schools, Smithfield Academy and Linden Grove Seminary for Girls. By the middle of the 19th century changes in transportation pushed the village into the background and it remains very much unchanged today.
