A mile and a half east of this point, Turner Ashby, Stonewall Jackson's cavalry commander, was killed, June 6, 1862, while opposing Fremont's advance.

The site of Ashby's death is marked with a memorial and a Civil War Trails display describing the Battle of Chestnut Ridge. A geocache by that name is located at the site. Today the area is a small protected wooded hillside surrounded by suburban sprawl.
