The sign is on the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool Canal and close to the meadows themselves.

The canal was built partly to transport coal from the nearby coal mines but these days is only used by leisure boats.

Over time some of the mine seams subsided, leaving depressions in the ground which then filled with water.

These wetlands now provide a unique habitat for various forms of wildlife.

There are a number of public footpaths around the site, but part of it is closed off to protect the more fragile areas and ensure the ecology is preserved.

The sign explains how the ecology of the area is interconnected.
