Im Jahr 2003 konnte an der KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau eine neue Hauptausstellung eröffnet werden. Die Neugestaltung der KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau wurde ab 1997 vom Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte in Abstimmung mit dem Comité International de Dachau und unter Einbeziehung der Leitung der KZ-Gedenkstätte durchgeführt. Ein wissenschaftlicher Fachbeirat begleitete das Projekt. Für die Baumaßnahmen war das Staatliche Hochbauamt Freising verantwortlich. Das Gesamtprojekt wurde von der Landeszentrale für Politische Bildungsarbeit verantwortet.
Im Zentrum der Hauptausstellung steht das Schicksal der Häftlinge. Das Leitmotiv ist der „Weg der Häftlinge“: Dieser steht für den Weg der Häftlinge ins Lager, ihr Leben im Lager, ihren Weg in den Tod oder in die Befreiung. Vermittelt wird dies durch Berichte und Zeichnungen der Häftlinge, durch Biographien, aber auch durch die historischen Orte selbst.
