"It was billed as The Grandest Mountain Railway on Earth. For 3i, years, people came from around the world to ride the "Crookedest Railroad in the -VVorld." Rolling through lush redwood forests, or climbing the mountain, they took in the spectacular vistas around each turn. kt night they dined and danced at the Summit Tavern in a setting unlike any other. Built in 1896, Mount Tainalpais Scenic Railway was one of a brotherhood of scenic a railways sprinkled around the world. The railroad's literature listed the multitude of sights San Francisco, the Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the distant Sierra....and it cost less than any other! The mountain railroad was celebrated by those who rode it. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, visited with his family in May 1923 and later wrote, "...in all our wanderings we have never had a more " In a time 0-lorious experience. before Disneyland., television, and massive sports spectaculars, credible get-away Mount 'carnalpais was (and still is) an incredible getaway.
