Novorenesancní cinžovní dum postaven v letech 1854-1855 podle projektu vídenského architekta Franze Frohlicha jako mestský palác od konce minulého století sloužil brnenským úradum a institucím"

Chátrající budovu prodala radnice pred lety španelské firme Comsa za 32 milionu korun. Nový majitel dum prestavel a v léte 2009 otevrel ctyrhvezdickový hotel. V prosinci 2011 zacala firma Comsa jednat o prodeji retezci Barceló. Tento španelský retezec provozuje hotely v 17 zemích sveta a brnenský je tretí v Ceské republice a první mimopražský.
Práve pro tento retezec stavební firma Comsa hotel rekonstruovala. Tesne pred podpisem smlouvy ovšem spolecnost Barceló odmítla prevzetí hotelu podepsat. Protože v kupní smlouve byl ze strany mesta Brna presne stanoven termín, do kdy musí být hotel otevren (jinak hrozilo milionové penále), hotel otevrela spolecnost Comsa a obrátila se na španelský soud. Ten jí dal za pravdu.
V soucasné dobe však hotel provozuje retezec Barceló jak se to odráží i v názvu hotelu.
